How does one know whether to start work from home? What are the key considerations? These are profound questions. For some, going after ways to work from home will lead to great success and others will experience failure. This article will cover both whether or not you are cut out to work from home and, if so, some opportunities to accomplish this. This is not an article about telecommuting as a company employee; it is about working for yourself at or out of your home. This topic can be of special relevance to those in semi-retirement or fully retired and facing the undesirable situation of having to go back to work.

The suitability factors shown below do not label people as being worthy or unworthy, only whether they’re cut out to work from home.

What about factors that suggest a person is suited to work on his or her own? These people:

a) Don’t need a boss to give direction and motivate them;

b) Like to be responsible for their own success;

c) Have self-discipline; and

d) Don’t need constant social interaction.

Characteristics that suggest incompatibility with self-employment are:

a) Lack of self-discipline;

b) Preference to be in group environments with lots of social interaction; and

c) Preference for a structured environment with results being primarily caused by others. These folks would not want to be their own bosses and have responsibility for overall success rest largely in their own hands. Such folks are valuable employees in essential support roles in larger organizations.

Most folks can pretty much identify the personal traits that indicate suitability for a corporate environment vs. self-employment. For those that believe that they are in one category, perhaps mostly due to work experience, but want to explore whether they could venture into the other category, there’s excellent help available in a number of forms. One of the very best is the well-known Myers-Briggs personality assessment. It is really excellent and digs deep to assess people’s preferences and personality types. It does not cost an arm and a leg and can be a fantastic self-discovery tool for just about anybody. I have taken it several times. (Note: I have no financial relationship with Myers-Briggs.)

Now let’s address some additional considerations for those who seek to work from home. The sky’s the limit on what kinds of work can be performed from home. It could be anything from medical records transcription to psychotherapy to event management to being a manufacturer’s representative to running an online marketing business that is built upon web traffic. You could be involved in physical goods or services as an MLM representative or in other types of network marketing or in franchises. The possibilities are limited only by one’s imagination.

Other advantages for those who work at home include:

a) A big reduction in commuting time and expenses such as gasoline, tolls, vehicle wear and tear, and even clothing. For some, the reduction in these expenses is sizable enough to be the equivalent of a raise if they were working for somebody else and locked into commuting;

b) Possible tax benefits through use of your home for work purposes; and

c) Major geographic freedom depending on the kind of from-home work one chooses. For example, if one were involved in online marketing with work from internet, you could relocate to another part of the country (or world) without skipping a beat in your business. Where you physically reside makes absolutely no difference and you wouldn’t have to start over if you wanted to move from wintry Detroit to sunny Florida.

Even more advantages for the work-at-homers exist. There is more likelihood of being able to transition at your preferred pace from full-time work to semi-retirement to retirement. It’s really in your own hands. One can pursue income as a primary component in one’s financial independence or just by earning some extra spending money. Again, the choices are vast. Here is a useful tool for finding your way through the countless opportunities, many of them worthy and many of them unworthy or outright frauds. Opportunities abound, yet your exploration and selection must be diligent. It could be a disaster to get involved in a bad enterprise. Make sure you look at good business packages and see real evidence of ongoing support from whatever company you choose. And if something seems to good to be true, it likely isn’t true.

How to choose tools to create traffic to a website when there are so many online marketing techniques out there? Here are the five steps for appearing on the first page of search engine results, which is the key to how to increase hits on your website. I followed the steps shown below and my very first article made it to the #1 spot on a Google search engine results page with 68 million results. Here’s how.

1. Develop a preliminary subject that can be honed to a clear target statement. The important tool for this stage is your own mind.
2. Perform keyword research based on your preliminary subject.  Keywords can range from single words to a “long-tail” keyword phrase of even five or six words; a keyword phrase of several words still counts as a single keyword if you define it that way. Well-chosen one- or two-word keyword phrases can be very popular, yet sometimes so much so that you probably will be left behind in driving traffic to your website because everybody else is using the same words. Being more specific, long-tail keywords attract folks that are more interested in your message.
3. Create a title for your message based on your preliminary subject and keyword research.  The title must be a visual speed bump. You can choose to do the work yourself or pay to outsource it.
4. Create a message made of quality content.  You can do it yourself; some folks achieve quicker success through outsourcing.
5. Get the word out. This is where the rubber meets the road. From all the possibilities, here are the most important tools in which you can have a direct impact:
a) Your blog site.

b) Published articles.

c) Posted videos.

d) Social bookmarks.

e) Paid advertising.

Some people consider analytics that measure traffic to your website and backlinks as tools by which you may directly control creation of traffic to your website. However, backlinks are optimally generated by publishing content of high enough quality that outside readers install links to your site. So, in the context of this article analytics and backlinks are considered to indirectly create traffic to your website. Note: a) through d) can be done for free or outsourced for a fee.

a) Your blog site is your commercial face on the internet. It’s the major stepping off point for deriving income, either through your primary product or as an “affiliate” for third party vendors.

b) Published articles are mandatory. Quality content will create the internet equivalent of word of mouth. There are many ways to get your articles distributed broadly in a short period of time.

c) Another essential tool is to post your video presentations on YouTube and other video sites. Your  search engine rankings will be strengthened by videos that complement your online articles.

d) To fail to social bookmark your work is to seriously curtail your success in creating traffic. Social bookmarking, i.e. posting news of your article (or a short summary of it) on Facebook and other social sites, gains wide distribution quickly.

e) Paid internet advertising, such as a banner ad, can be useful as a tool. You can also create video ads and social bookmarking ads. You pay, but you’ll get quicker results than from free choices. Stay away from Pay Per Click unless you have expert knowledge.

There are a large number of tools to create traffic to a website for sale. I recommend a conservative approach on acquiring them. There are useful free ones available.  Don’t get so burdened by tools that you cannot focus on subject content.
